The equality legislation gives the Equality Authority the power to undertake or sponsor research to progress its functions. The Research Section plans and commissions social and policy research across the areas covered by the Employment Equality Acts 1998 and 2004, and the Equal Status Acts 2000 to 2004.

The Research Section also implemented the work of the Equality Studies Unit, a technical assistance measure which was funded under the Employment and Human Resource Development Operational Programme (EHRDOP) of the National Development Plan 2000 - 2006. The ESU focused on equal opportunities and the accommodation of diversity in labour market policies and education and training programmes.
